Sir Charles Bowen has Iwen granted leave of absence from the Legislative Council tor the remainder of the session, on account of ill-health. Mr Richard Giles Knight, who had tieen in business in Wellington as a eailmaker for a great number of years, died at his residence Island 'Bay, on Monday, aged <6. Ho •was twice married, and has lett a widow and a family of 12. Mr. Mcißeath, of Otaki, and one of the best known hotel-keep-ers in the North Island, was seized with a sudden attack of illness early on Monday morning, and his condition is causing anxiety to his friends. News has been received that Mr. J. Trezise, proprietor of the ImU, perial confectionery shop in lalinerv ston North, died in the W elhngton * Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Deceased, who came from Paluatua about a year ago, had been in bad health for some time. A quiet wedding took place on last at the residence of the' biide's parents, Murphy's Line, fcbuth Featheraton, when May gheedy Mcffvor, only daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Victor James Gallie, R.iF.A., who has been awarded the Military Cross, for bravery in the field is a eon of Mr. John Gallie, of WeUington. He served at Sa*. moa with, the Advance Guard for nine months, and on his return to New Zealand left for England at his own expense, and was immediately ' (riven a commission in the IRbya.l Field Artillery. He was wounded an the Battle of Ypres, and came through the Somme fighting without r scratch. One of his brothers, Lieut. Oscar Gallie, was a former resdient of Masterton. The resignation of Mr. J. Prende--ville, town clerk,, w&s accepted at a meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council on Monday evening, when eulogistic references were made to Jus'faithful services to the town, not only as Town Clerk, but in other capacities. Mr. Prendeville has acted as chairman of the Kbhool Committee for a number of years, and as : officer, commanding the military dis- , teidj . has ' '.sacrificed; considerable time on behalf of the public. Mr Brendeville is l\kely to receive a "send-off" in keeping with the universal respect in which lie is held. Mr. John McKay, an old resident of passed away at his residence in Kurlpuni Street on Wednesday morning at the ago of seventy-four , years. The deceased came to this district as Crown Lands ranger about thirty years ago, but iias been living in retirement for I » considerable period. 'ln bis younger Hayp he took ait active part in , public life in the South Island, and was largely responsible for the establishment of the CI nth a woollen mills. He endeavoiired some years ago to establish mills in, Masterton, hut his efforts wore not attended with success. He was a well-read man wlip followed closely the political affairs of the Dominion. An old and respected resident of Masterton. in the person of Mr Samuel Kingdon, passed away on Wednesday morning. The deceased, who was seventy-nine years of age, arrived ' here nearly forty years ago, «nd for a considerable period carried on a plumbing business. Hb took an active interest in Fire Brigade matters in the early days, and was Captain of • the Volunteer Fire Brigade. He was also an enthusiasr tie member of the Veterans' Association, and was custodian of the public baths for several years. He f leaves on son (Mr. S. Kingdon) and ' two daughters. One of his sons mysteriously disappeared a, few yt£rß back, and no trace of him. has since been found. •Rie late Mr (James Baggarley, whose funeral took place at Carterton on Sunday, was born in Nolson In 1842—75 years ago. He spent most of his childhood in Wellington, and came to the .Wairarapa when ai , jwung'man. He was a successful carpenter and builder. He married a . daughter of the late Mr James Peters, one of Carterton's pioneer settlers, and reared a family of eight children, six of wliom still sur.vive. His wife pro-deceased liim ten years. The members of the family are* Mr. A. H. Baggarley, CartertonMr. S. Baggarley, Waikato; Mrs Cr. H. Eaton, Kokotan; i Mitt. J. 'iPaynor Masterton; Mrs H. ■ Mtjxlrock, Wiaverksy; and L' Miss ' Baggarley, of Carterton. There are a number of grand-children.
