EXEMPTIONS.
The "-Manawatu Times" i'alls into the error of supposing that because representatives of the shearers and slaughtermen -have .been authorised to lodge appeals under tlie Military Service Act, these brandies of industry |are to be .exempted from military service. Such a contingency was never contemplated by the authorities It .may happen that, as a result of appeals soifle of the shearers„ drawn in the ballot will be permitted to "cut-out" their sheds. Similarly, slaughtermen may be allowed to complete the slaughtering season. There is, however, not the slightest reason to suppose that either of these industries will be permanently exempted. The only men who stand the. slightest chance of permanent exemption are the coalminers, and, .strangely enough, these are the very men who go on strike and demand the repeal of the Military Service Act.
