OBJECT OF FRENCH ATTACK.
(Rcuter's Telegram.) (Received Last Night, 9 o'clock.) LONDON, August 18th. The "Times" correspondent in Paris says:—One object of Thursday's French operations' was to cut through the Guillemont-Maurepas road. In order to enable the British to turn Guillemont from, the south, the French encircled Mau rep as from the north. A preliminary bombardment was begun on Sunday, the Germans fiercely replying. The French were equally successful south of Maurepa®. steadily nearing the village, and forest in the centre of the Maurepas Plateau. " South of the Somme there are difficulties. South of ißelloy Plateau, as far as Chaulnes, is a network of defences. The main portion of tlie village of Carbonnel. On the Panis-Bethune road, protecting trenches were carried.
