A DESERTER.

It is officially stated that a member of the Now Zealand expeditionary forces has deserted and gone over to the enemy. The name of the deserter is not yet given, but it will be awaited with keen anxiety. Meanwhile, the public will feel a sense of insecurity until every person of German origin is removed from our forces. AVe cannot afford to take risks in tin's critical period. We have, no doubt, hundreds of men of German parentage who are loyal to the core. But one single act of treachery must put us upon our guard. The Minister of Defence should immediately resolve upon a process of cleaning up.
