. A farmer who wimo to town to purchase a 1 torso gave the magistrate's Court, yesterday, an account of his experiences. Tho .case was one in which Honry Francis Mcllrov was charged with ha vine: stolen i! 4, the property of John Kdwards, 011 the 4th inst. Mi- H'. f'\ O'Ljary appeared for the accused. Tho complainant stated that ho was the. manager ol Mr McKeJlar's farm at Ohariu. He came into town 011 Wednesday of last week, intending to 'buy a horse. The accmsod met h.im near the ißoval Tiger Hotel, ami invited him to look at a horse at Thorndon. Later in. the day witness wont to accused's house with him. aftcj- which they visited the. Thistle Tnn and the Hotel Cecil. At the Litter place Mcllrov accompanied him to tho yard, put his hand in witness's pocket, and took four £J notes. TOdwards exclaimed: -''.What's the game?", but in .place, of an answer his companion took to his heels. Edwards followed, saw McTlrov jump on liis cart and drive, down the street, and went in pursuit until he lost sight .of him. About -j.!/) p. m. the complainant came across the horse and cart in the vicinity „|' the Bank of New Zealand, Lambton Quay, there apparently being nobody in charge of the turnout.' ]-Jo made a. complaint to a constable; and. then the accused appeared, and '.Kd wards ga vo him in charge. On being questioned by Mr O'Leary, wjtnoss stated that he was quite sober wlion ho gave Mcllroy in charge—he had been drinking "light shandies." After further evidence had been heard.
