THE NATIONAL CABINET.
The proposal to form a National Cabinet in New Zealand will, it is understood, take definite shape in the course of a day or two. An announcement on the subject will probably be made when the House meets on Tuesday next. Meanwhile, it is very regrettable to find a newspaper like the ■'New Zealand Tim/es," which has posed as the official mouthpiece of the Opposition, making reckless political attacks upon the Minister of Defence, with tlie obvious intention of securing the removal of that gentleman from the Cabinet. It need hardly be said that if the price of coalition is to be the jettisoning of the Hon. James Allen, the National Cabinet proposal will not fluctuate. A way may be found, however, for relieving this Minister of one or more of his portfolios, and of admitting Sir Joseph Ward, Mr Myers, and possibly Dr. McNa-b to the Ministry during the progress of the war. If this object can be achieved, and party politics abandoned in the meantime,.the great bulk of the people will be profoundly grateful.
