GERMANS USE ASPHYXIATING GAS,
(Received Last Night, 11.30 o'clock.) PETROGRAD, June 2. Official- The enemy, on the left bank of the Vistula, on Sunday night developed an active artiller.y fire along' the whole front northward of tho Pilitza. . At 4.o'clock in the morning, under the cover ot smoke, ana using gas, they~ extensively attacked, in great strength, our position on the Baiira, near Witkovitza, Brohow, Sochaczeff, and Koslow. The attack was characterised by extraordinary tenacity on the lower Rawka. „ , ~,, , rt Notwithstanding the gas, of which, the fumes were perceptible, J J miles behind our front, all the., attacks were repused. > ' T The enemy in Oalicia attacked Forts 7 to 11, westward and ortliwestward or Przemysl, and approached on Sunday night to within two hundred' paces of gaining the orecincts of Fort 7. An obstinate battle took place until the afternoon, of Monday, wlien the enemy was repulsed., with enormous losses. Twenty-three officers and 600 men who entered the fort were made PUS< The S 'Germans brought reserves into the battle at Stryj, but the result is not yet known. Our success at Svitza has continued. Already we have sent 10,660 prisoners to the rear, including 238 officers.
