THE TERRITORIAL FORCE.
The Territorial Force of New Zealand has been in existence for four yearsLast year its strength was 25,902. Some of those liable to serve have possibly ibeen transferred, by this time, to the reserve. It is fair to assume that at least 20,000 Territorials of the military age, Le., over 20 years, are available for service abroad. How many of these have registered to date? One would have thought that trained men would have been the 1 first to go. Since compulsory training came into operation, our military ihas cost us nearly £2,000.'y"»9, or about £500,000 per year. What has this money been expended for, unless it has been for the provision of a fighting force when it is required? -It is idle to say that the Ter-, ritorials are needed for home defence.' They are needed for no such tiling. The State has no right to expend, money in training raw recruits at Trenth&m when it already has trained men available for service. The Territorials should be drawn upon to the fullest extent in the present hour of emergiency.
