THE PRISONER'S CAREER. The order on which Gaudin was arrested was issued by the Administrator of Samoa (Colonel Logan), and as the offence for which he has now been sentenced was against the military regulations of Samoa, the whole conduct of the trial was directed by the Samoan authorities (says the "Post")- The Administration of Samoa is under the direct control of the Imperial Government, so that tho civil authorities in New Zealand have no information regarding the nature of the charges, nor bad they ally' voice in determining the punishment.

He was a most enthusiastic volunteer officer and,exceedingly popular with his company. At the time of his arrest he was captain in reserve of the 3rd Auckland Regiment. He was formerly well known as art athlete, having represented Auckland on various occasions in running, jumping, and Rugby football contests. He was first elected to the Auckland City Council in 1911. and was re-elect-ed'in 1913 for a second term. In 1906 he became a men:her of the City Schools Committee, of which body he was elected chairman in IW9. Tins position he held until 1913, when lie resigned on account of removing h'.s residence to Takapuna. He was elected to the Takapuna Borough Council last year. His imprisonment automatically deprives hint of all bis official positions.
