IN THE PINK OF CONDITION. THEIR WORK IS SMART. "Times & Sydney Svn Services." (Received December 29, 8.30 a.m ) LONDON, December 28. The Australasian contingent paraded the' European and native quarters in Cairo on Wednesday last. Tho men and horses aj'e in the pink of condition, and their work was extremely smart and evoked lepeated expressions of admiration. Natives thronging tha route were particularly impressed when the line of troops was interrupted to permit a native funeral to pass in front, tile Regimental Band continuing to play "It's a Long Way to Tipperary." ENCAMPED ON THE DESERT. (Received Last Night, 8.80 o'clock.) LONDON, December 29. The "Daily Telegraph's" correspondent at Cairo says that the Australians and New Zealanders arc now in the desert in camps. Whatever they «ro asked to do is done seriously, because they may improve in efficiency and assist in the contribution of their lie st energies to the Empire's work, in Europe. Just as the Sydney's men showed His Majesty tho King that the Australian Navy could bo trusted to do its part on the seas, young Australian aad New Zealand armies are thirsting to prove that the colonial soldier is a splendid addition to the Empire's strength. They have battalion p-arrades. It is splendid fatig/uc duty, and a pleasure, because it is necessary. The horsemen, and they are all fine horsemen, are hard at it getting the animals in condition. The : r horses are of a handy type. No conditions are too hard for these men. Some New Zea landers, who were for some time without tents, slept on the sand. When the rain eame, the officers told them that they had better make shelters. The Auckland battalion searched for pieces of timber and oat bags, and within half an hour, everyone was snugly boused in wha.res, which doubtless will bo almost reluctantly exchanged for hell -tents.
