CHRISTMAS AND THE WAR
SERVICES IN ENGLAND. ''Times & Sydney Sun Services." (Received Laat Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LONUON, December 27. There were unusually large congregations at Christmas services. Many were wearing mourning. The sermons were of a most impressive character. The Dean of St. Paul's declared : "We must not allow ourselves" to talk of the bankruptcy of Christianity and civilisation, because ,a nation has reverted to moral savagery." The Dean of Westminster said: "Christendom is shocked and affronted at the spectacle of defenceless towns being demolished and women and children massacred to satisfy the bloodthirsty policy of ruthless terrorism. We might well enquire whether neutrals were to look on unprotesting in a hypnotised stupor, l>ecause inter- , ferenee might compromise their interests.-' - Cardinal Bourke, d Westminster Cathedral, declared: "Men are beginning to realise the great truth, that permanent peace depends upon nn union with God." The wounded in all the hospitals were treated -with generous Christmas fare. Troops at the front sang hymns in ruined Cathedrals, while British and Germans joined in carol singing.
