THE LABOUR UNIONS.
I'he Labour Unions of Wellington may be prompted by . very humane motives in calling upon the ■Government to'compel the employers to agree to Sir Joshua Williams acting as an arbitrator in the labour dispute." We cannot help thinking, however,, that they are allotting their zeal for arbitration to' outrun their discretion. In the first place, what right has the Government to interfere when there is no question upon which to arbitrate? In the. second place, what have the Labour Unions to gain by the Federationiste getting back to work without' registration ? In the third place, how can Arbitration Unionists consistently countenance any measure which might deprive registered Unionists of work and .allow those who are opposed to arbitration to., take their l place .? The Government dare not,, at the present stage, take any step which would-im-peril the positions of \hose' w k hb camfe forward in the country's hour of need and rendered yeoman service on the waterfront. There is no dispute now to settle. All that the strike leaders' have to do -is to settle between themselves when they are going to cease subsisting upon the charity of their fellows.
