"THE GORDIAN KNOT."
Some remarks passed in the Hoiuse of Representatives on Friday night by the- Prime Minister about ''cutting the Gordian knot," have been interpreted to mean that if the Opposition continues its policy of obstruction Mr Massey will ask for a dissolution. While we not ourselves believe that the Premier has any immediate intention of going to tho country, it would be as well for Sir Joseph Ward to remember that if ho forces an appeal to, the constituencies—for there would be no other course open if the work of Parliament were not a-llowed to proceed—tho Opposition would cut a very sorry figure. As a party, it was : never hold in such disrespect as it is to-day, and the effort of one of its leading members (Mr G, W. Russell) to rob tho country constituencies of their quota in the matter of representation, will not soon be forgotten. The balding up of the business of the House will only serve to deepen the public resentment at the degradation of Parliament bv a discredited minority.
