AT CHRISTCHURCH.

LANDING OF RACEHORSES. EVERYTHING QUIET. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Matters were qyiet oai the waterfront all clay. There was a big muster when the roll was called'in the Coronation Hall this morning. It is understood that the Strike Committee is rigidly enforcing the rulo that every man must attend when the roll is called, unless otwing to illness or some equally strong reason that he is unabe to appeal' in person, in which ca«e he must notify the committee. The. fleet of vessels at anchor in tho stream has been increased to eight. In addition to tho Kaitangata, K<> wliai, Karamu, Flora, Kini, and Canopus, there are also the steadier Melbourne and tlio schooner Te Aroha. The Melbourne arrived late last night with a full cargo af coal from Newcastle. She is owned in Melbourne, and her. crew are members of. the Australian Seamen's and Firemen's Union. It is not known what will be done regarding the steamer, but she will remain at anchor for the tim'o being. The Te Aroilia, wh< ih is an auxiliary i crew vessel, left lier berth at Gladstone Pier this morning . and went out to anchorage in the stream. A very strong .north-cast gale was blowing at Lytteltpn all night, and a heavy sea was' running up the harbour. None otf the vessels' dragged their anchors, however, and all were riding safely to-their cables tins morning. The gale moderated at an early hour, and the was fine and warm to-day, but a heavy swell j was running up the harbour. j After a .smart trip from Wellington, the Maunganui reached port i shortly after 8.80 a.m.. and there were then on the wharf a huge number of people. Union "pickets were in position, and a large number of watersidors were gathered 011 the pier. There was absolutely no excitement. Within five minutes of the time the vessel was tied up, the first racehorse . came over the side. It was Undecided, and the Cup candidate was followed promptly by Haskayne and Hymettius in that order. The remainder of the thirty-two horses were discharged at freque.it intervals, without any hitch, and twenty-six were sent to Christehurch at midday, the balance following later. The horses landed were. Football, Downham, Sea Pink, Ventura, Culprit. Tatterley, French Rose. Patronale, Haskayne, Hyettius. Peary. Witched, 'Alt-oar, The Hague.Undecided, Lady Mout.oa, Lord Re.nown, Ariom, Kanikij Bonny Helen, Ardent. Princess• Moutoa, -Imarose, Kiilgsway, Crown Pearl, RoyaFArnis, Sanguinary, Wahine, Brocade, Glenfinnan arid Autumuus. A moving picture operator received permission from the strike committer to take pictures of the unloading, provided lie did not turn the

camera on the strikers. Pickets wore kept busy, ensuring that tho men should be kept out of the field of the camera, but after three or four horses had been landed the operator ceased work and left for Christchurcli.

A Press photographer was detected by the strikers, 'and a number of plates were exposed to the light and spoilt under directions from the picket.

Most of tho passengers of the Maori, after collecting their luggage, returned to Christchurcli during the afternoon, but others transferred their belongings t'o the Maunganui, with tho object of going north by her to-night. The mails were landed from the Maori and placed on. board the Maunganui.

Owing to tho strike, it has been decided to postpone the first «? the series of wool sales to bo hold in Christchurch from 13tli inst to 21st inst.

In the event of the strike not being over by the last-mentioned date, it is probable that the sale will befurther postponed. The C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting, the trotting meeting, and the Canterbury A. and P. Association's jubilee show will bo held as originally arranged.
