STRANGE CONDUCT OF TRAMWAYMEN. SPECIAL CONSTABLES ORDERED OUT OF CARS. MOVEMENTS OF WAIRARAPA CONTINGENT. WELLINGTON, La&t Night. It is reported that instances occurred to-day in which special constables

Ihyere recognised, while riding on tramcars, and that the cars were at once stopped and 1 the specials ordered to quit, the conductors declaring that the cars would not'" move another | yard until they did so. The specials, it is stated, complied with the order, and got out. When the Mayor was questioned on. the point, he said he had inquiries made, and the stories could not be substantiated. Other persons, however, assert that such incidents did actually occur. The party of mounted men from the Wairarapa, after leaving Petone, left the main road and made a detour in the direction of, it is believed, Johnsonville, where it is supposed they will junction with a contingent from the Manawatu, and enter the city by a round-about route. The warship Psyche to-night played her searchlight along the Hutt road, the hills overlooking which are held by strikers pickets, waiting for the approach of any parties of constables or free labourers who may attempt to enter the city that way. A rumour gained currency during the evening that the Garrison Hall had been the scene of a demonstration by the strikers that led to the defence authorities bringing out Maxim guns to clear the crowd, but inquiries showed this to have been a pure invention.
