"PERSISTENT RUMOUR."
- (To. the Editor) Sir, —There is a paragraph in your issue ef this morning, in which .you quote the Eketaliuna Express as stating that thSre is a persistent rumour to the effect that "Mr J. T. M. Honisby is to be the Opposition candidate for the Masterton seat at the next ' general election," or words to that effect. .As the person, perhaps, •; most nearly in* terested, would you permit me to say that so far as I am concerned I have never heard the rumour, nor do 1 credit it. There are very good and more than sufficient reasons why 1 should not, at the present juncture, have my name mixed up with politics —more especially party politics. 1 shall therefore be very much obliged to you if you will draw your Eketaliuna contemporary's attention to the fact that the "persistent rumour" is on a par with the announcement once made of the death of Mark Twain. That distinguished man received the news of his death with some surprise, and at once telegraphed to the newspaper originating the statement to the effect "that the news was greatly exaggerated!"— Your, # etc., J. T. M. HORNSBY.
