SWANS ON THE THAMES.
Mr T. Abnett, the King's swan master, and 'the swan masters to the Vintners' and the Dyers' Companies, have ju6t /concluded '■'■ their , swan upping, as it is called, for the purpose oflsekrcbiriig marking'all the young birds' "or *cyg»ets hatched -dulK ing ytha on theThameis. The' swan masters searched all the islands and backwaters between Southwark Bridge and-Henley, and discovered about 600 young birds, a remarkable number compared with previous years. One of the broods consisted otf nine cygnets, one of the largest ever found oh the Thames. , This Brood was found 1 at Reading; ; Two* of the birds, however, were dead. ■*mark-able broods were seven each at Weybridge and : -Boveney Lock, and six each at Windsor, Halliford, and Shepperton: The greatest number of bh-ds was-found at Windsor. '
