FLAG SALUTED IN MASTERTON
PRESENTATION TO SERGEANT
BRUNTON,
Tho Masterton Territorials and Senior Cadets paraded at th e Drill Hall yesterday morning, and marched through the town to the Public Park, accompanied by the Brass Band.and the Caledonian Pipe Band playing stirring- marches. Captain Bradd?ll was in charge, supported by staff-officers. The British flag Avas\-saluted, and th e National, Anthem, was played. The Company returned to the Drill Hall, where they formed up with the Band in the centre.
His Worshi-p tfie Mayor (Mr J. M. Cora-dine), addressing the officers, men and lads, expressed hi*, pleasure at seeing such a. large muster to celebrate the 48th birthday of their King. Opportunity would bo taken of the present gathering to make a presentation to one of the members of the company. This would be done by the'member for the district, and he called upon Mr Syke-s to addr?ss the men.
Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., expressed pleasure in taking part with them in doing honour to Hi s Imperial Majesty, King George V. on his 48th birthday and tho third year of his reign. Ah loyal subjects' they were assembled there- for this purpose and to show their love for the flag, wliich they hoped would continue to. wave over the Empire as long as the sun and stars lasted. It was an nnblcm of liberty and order. He had also a pleasant duty to perform on this occasion. Tt was to show honour to a Masterton boy—one of the contingent sent to' Canada. Through some mistake 2-0 Senior Cadets had been selected to go to Canada. The (invitation from the Canadian Government was only to 14. and our own Government decided to pay tho expenses of the extra six sent and present the Cadets with gold medaly in commemoration of the occasion. Masterton was represented by Sergeant Brunton, and he called upon him to come forward and receive hrs reward.
Sergeant Brunton stepped up to the platform, and was accorded a • round of applause. Mr Sykes then pinned the gold medal on his breast, at the same time stating that the New E->aland Cadets had acquitted themselves well in the competitions in Canada. Out of the seven, cups offered as prizos, iliey had carried off six—(applause)—besides minor trophies. Mr Sykes addressed a few words of encouragement to the young sergeant. . " * Captain Braddell thanked " the Mayor and member of the district and called for three cheers for each and three cheers For Sergeant Brim- , : ton. These were heartily responded to by the brigade and visitors. Tim * Band played the National Anthem, officers and men standing at salute, and the men were dismissed.
