THE COMMONWEALTH GIFT.
The announcement that the Commonj wealth of Australia intends construct- [ ing another Dreadnought and a few i mere destroyers and submarines, will l>e re-reived /with intense interest. It ifi quite evident that the Labour Government of Australia views the business of defence in cjuit-3 a different light than do the Labourites of New Zealand. The Prime Minister of the Common wealth quotes figures to that T«c>he among the Dominions is taking defence seriously. He says that the annual expenditure per head of population in Australia on defence i« £1 Is 2d. while the of- New Zealand ia only lis 2d. This is hardly a, .fair comparison, even if the figures-be. correct. How much per centuin on its national estate is being- expended by Australia ? Does it ooiiipare with New Zealand in tlris •respect? What are the relative dangers from invasion of the two countries? Tf Australia prompted by Imperial sentiment in it s defence proposals, or .is it actuated by a desire for self-preservation? These are pertinent when we consider the measures taken for local defenoe.'
