CRAZES IN ART.
New crazes in art came in tor .some oubspokon criticism by Judge Backhouse, When speaking last week at the annual meeting of the Sydney Philharmonic Society. "This Society is showing what the music of tho great masters is," he said. "I am afraid that in all art at tho present time there is a tendency to run after the singular, the bizarre, and very often the nasty. We see it on the stage in so-called dancing, wlii'Ji really comprises a combination of what is described in,the Police Court and what happens in a shambles. We see it in painting, in the pictures cf the Futurists and the Post-impression-ists. We «ee it also in the drama, in some 'plays wo .read of, which, are founded upon subjects which ordinary decent people never talk aoout. Tho spirit I am complaining of seems to be. invading the musical world also with the work of the new composer} This Society, however, is doing wonderful work in showing the public what really good music is, and in inducing our composers to follow on •those lines which retain their originality."
