CHARGES OF THEFT
AGAINST WELLINGTON COXSTABLE. i (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tho Magistrate's Court was crowded to-day, when Charles Alfred Remmere, ex-constable, was charged with a series of thefts. ' The first charge - taken \ra.s that of robbery from the premises of Mr Ross, jeweller, tho value of tho stolen articles being estimated at £l4O. Mary Ledger, a boarding-house-keeper, gave evidence that on January 22nd the accused left his overcoat at her place, and on the 29tli, •she, with one of the boarders, examined tho pockets of the coat, and found wrapped in some silk handkerchiefs a large number of articles of jewellery. She at once sent for tho detectives. Detective Andrews gave, evidence that when lie charged the accused with stealing the jewellery, lie made no reply. After Remmers had been before the Court ho told witness >' ho had broken Ross's window at 3 a.m. on January 22nd, and took the jewellery. He had committed the offence single-handed, and on the spur of tho moment, because ho owed some money to his sister in England, and had promised to bring her and his mother out to New Zealand. He had watched tho constable.on tho adjoining beat until ho was satisfied that b« was far enough away not to hear lilm'. ]n addition to the jewellery found in his overcoat about fifty tie-pins wore discovered floating in a cardboard box in the harbour, r The accused pleaded guilty, and wa-, committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Remmers also pleaded' miiltv to a charge of stealing a hat from Wallace's, and cutlerv from R adfords. He elected to bo tried hv jury. Formally charged, the accused had "'itbino- to say, and was committed for sentence
