PASTURES AND CROPS
THE DECEMBER REPORTS. The officers of tho Agricultural Department in the Wairarapa district report as follows for tiu fc month or December, Pahiatua.—Tho weather in December was distinctly of a suimner character. The heavy lands have boco-me baked through lack of intermittent showers, and the quantity of milk went down through tho same cause. We have not- the quantity of food there ought to ho at this time ol the \ oii-i". Showers are wanted to give rape and turnips as tart. Hay is being got in in good order. Early crops are ripening but late crops are poor. Shearin o- is now finished. Rainfall ior month, 0.75 in., rain falling on six days. Rainfall in December, 1911, 7.64 in.,' rain falling on twenty-one davs—T. -Bacon. i Masterton. —The first seasonable weather experienced during December has enabled good progress to be made with all kinds of farm and station work. Shearing operations except in a few instances have finished, and m some cases lambs have been dipped as a prevention against the maggot-Hj. Grass is more plentiful here tlus season than it has been for some years pa-st, and some very heavy crops ot hay are being liarvested. Potatoes are looking exceedingly well. A very marked improvement in tho state o air crops has taken place since dry weather has set in, and a good yield is now anticipated. Oats in many are now being harvested. On the 19th a windstorm of -unusual turv visited this district and did considerable damage to orchards and gardens. Fat. -stock are becoming very plentiful. There has been a good clip ot wool, but it is very light in condition. —'T. C. Webb. Carterton.—The weather for the month was exceptionally good, there having been ten fine warm sunny days straight off, which enabled many farmers to get in their hay crops, which are exceptionally good. On the 18th and 19th a south-east wind blow with hurricane force, doing great damage to the orchards, the hay that was cut being -scattered far and wide. Smce then we have had showers which will benefit the green crops. Early sown--1 out crops are looking well. b. I Tvens.
