Mr Vernon Riddiford arrived at Wellington yesterday, after a visit to Australia.
Mr W. Clement Cargill, Stratford, and formerly of Masterton, is about to take up his residence in one of the Auckland suburbs.
The complaints from which Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., is suffering, are said to be diabetes and sciatica. His many friends will hope that he will be speedily restored to health. ? . The death occurred yesterday morning of an old resident of the Manawatu district in the person, of Major F. E. Campbell, who passed away at his residence, at Awalhuri, at the age of 88 years.
It is understood that Mr Tregear, of Western Australia, and the Rev. Hammond, of Sydney, axe to visit tho Wairarapa shortly in the interests of No-License.
A Sydney cable states that Madame Melba recently contracted influenza, and Jbas now developed bronchitis. Under doctors' orders she relinquished her engagements for this week.
Mr Nesbit Mcßobie, of Waihi, and formerly of Pahiatua, has. announced | himself a candidate for tihe Ohinemuri , electorate in the Opposition interest. J Mr James McOomb, who contested Christchurdh East last election has definitely announced bis candidature for Avon as a Radical-Independent, Mr J Tanner is not standing. j
Mr E. M. Ryan, who has for some time past been in charge of (the boys' department oft he Wellington branch of the Y.M.C.A., temporarily, succeeds Mr H. N. Holmes as general secretary of the institution. . • .
The death is reported of Mr Alexander iM. S. MoLeod, of Pahiaoa, near MartinjborougJh. .Hie deceased, with his brother John, followed ' farming pursuits in Hawke's Bay for a number of years. He tad been ailing for a considerable time. ,
At the -meeting of the AVairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association yesterday, tihe action of the Board of Directors in appointing Mr F. "C. Tumor, of Eketaihuna, to the directorate, to fill -the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr C. B, Phaxazyn, was confirmed. ' • , The death occurred at Nelson-' on Tuesday night (says a. Press' Association telegram) of Mr Arthur S. Collyns, a-very early colonist, and at one time a member of the House of Re]prepresentatives and Nelson Provincial Council. The late Mr Collyns, who was seventy-nine yedrs of age, arrived at Nelson in 1849.
Mr M. Caselberg, in acknowledging a vote of thanks at the annual meet-, ing of shareholders in Masfcertoi terday, stated .that he Ihoped to be able to .preside at their meetings for another ten years , (A. voice : Oh, 'onger than that!) Ih ten years he would be get-ting fairly old. He would be approaching .eighty. Of course, if he whs going to live to the age of the late Mr Bu riling, tlhat was another juevstion. (Laughter). • Another o}d identity of the W<pjrarapa, in the person of Mr William Birkett, of .Whareama, passed away yesterday ,at the age of sixty-one years. The deceased had been suffering for some time from a distressing and his end -was riot unexpected. He leaves a widow, four. daui ghters,.and one son. He had been for | years a member of the Tinui lodge or [ Foresters, and will be accorded a lodge; I funeral, which will leave his 'late residence at Wthiareaina at one o'clock tomorrow for the Tinui cemetery. Mr Ernest McEwen, son of Mr E. McEwen-, of- Masterton, died at the tansdowne Hospital yesterday, after an illness of several weeks. The deceased,. who was 33 years of age, was highly respected by all who knew him. He was prominent among sporting h odies of the town, and his assistance was always available' in the promotion of any social function. Deceased leaves a wife and child to mourn their loss, and to them will be extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral will'leave the residence of Mr McEwen, senr., 119 Dixon Street, on Saturday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, for the Masterton cemetery.
