NEW S. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.

A GENEROUS OFFER.

During the proceedings at the Garden Fete last evening, the Rev. H. Watson asked those assembled to give a real vote of thanks to Mrs and Mrs William Beethara ' for so kindly lending their beautiful garden. The speaker went on to say that the greatest need of the parish was a larger and more substantial church, and the vestry had estimated the total cost of the church and the necessary buildings for Sunday School, Club and other parish organisations would be £7,000. During the past year the sum of £6OO had been raised, and some £2OO more had been promised, and he was glad to state that a generous parishioner bad offered £I,OOO on condition of further andstrenuous effort being made by tbe parish. (Cheers). He saw no reason why by the end of the year the fund should not reach £2,000. apart from this generous offer. He knew it meant sacrifice, but anything that did not mean sacrifice was worth doing. The church ought to be the finest building in the town, more imposing and more beautifully furnished than any other, and he hoped that soon such a building would be reared in the town of Maslerton.
