ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.
During a speech at Oxford (Canterbury) on Wednesday last, the ActingTMiniHter fo Lauds (the Hon. D Buddo) uttered a warm testimony in favour of the New Zealand system of advances to settlers. He quoted from the London "Daily Mail" a statement that a number of English farmers visiting the French National Agricultural Show were astonished by the immense amount the French Government had advanced to ita farmers, the sum being £13,700,000, distributed among
125,000 cultivators. The Government of New Zealand, Mr Buddo pursued, had advanced £8.355,540, Victoria £1,225,430, and New South Wales £789,333. The expenses of management amounted in New Zealand to 1.7 per cent., in Victoria to 11.9 per cent, and in New South Wales to 6.9 per cent. As showing what the New Zealand Government had done to relieve the stringency of the money market, he further mentioned that during the year ending March 31st, 1909, the amount advanced to settlers was £1,493.835, and 'to workers £298,184, making a grand total of loans for the year of £1,792.019.
