The Hon. D. Buddo, Acting-Minis-ter for Lands, in the course of an interview at Christchurch, referred to the'proposal which was mentioned by the Prime Minister in his policy speech at Invercargill—that the duty of making the valuations and preparing the rating rolls, which is at present carried out by the Government officials, should be relegated to the various local bodies. He said that numbers of county and boroui» h councils had made representations lo him, urging that the present sys tern should be retained, and in no case had he received an expression of opinion approving of the suggested change. Subsequently the Chairman of the Ashley, Oxford, Eyre ton. and Cost Road Boards waited on the Minister, and assured him that the four bodies were entirely satisfied with the exhting system, and asked the Minister to represent tJ the Government their desire that no change should be made
