MAORI GENEALOGY.

COMPILATION OF WAIRARAPA AND HAWKE'S BAY RANGATIRAS. A committee of Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay Maoris has been engaged for some time past in tracing the ancestry of the reputed descendants of various leading rangatiras 6f a couple of generations back, with a view of compiling a reliable genealogy for various purposes connected with Native usages. The committee has gone to considerable trouble to insure accuracy, and the result of their investigations has been that the following names are authenticated as being those of chiefs or descendants of chiefs in the Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay, respectively : CHIEFS OF THE WAIRARAPA. Referring to Hapuku, the rangatira mentioned at the head of the second Hat, a local native gentleman states that there were tribal wars in the year 1848, at Pakiaka, Hawke's Bay, between tribes residing in Hawke's Bay. The leader of one section was Te Hapuku, and he insisted on fighting the other tribes. It was the Wairarapa and West Coasttribes that made Hapuku and other tribes give up their purpose, and Hapuku went back to live at Poukawa. If it had not been for the Wairarapa and West Coast tribes and chiefs, T« Hapuku would never have desisted, but would have fought every chief in Hawke's Bay.
