A STARTLING INCIDENT
By Telegraph—Press Association, WELLINGTON, April 13. The Marine Department is making inquiries into the report published regarding the startling incident connected with the small steamer Cygnet on Easter Monday at Akaroa, when it is said she was acting as a tender between the shore and the Union Company's steamer Mararoa. The report alleges that there were fully 600 persons on the Cygnet when she commenced to roll in an alarming manmr. The D-partiient states that the Qgnet has a permit for only 366 passengers, and if the vessel were carrying as many people as alleged there has been a serious breach of the regulations. There is always a Customs officer on the wharf to check the number of people boarding a vessel, and the Department is awaiting an official report on the matter.
