Hymns appropriate were sung by the choir, and the pulpit was occupied, in the morning by Mr Carr, of Ashhurst, and in the evening by the Rev. Mr Jones, who at one time was stationed in this district. Both gentlemen delivered impressive ser- ' mons, and remarked on the splendid harvests this season, for which they said one and all should tender their earnest thanks to the Almighty. A feature of the services was the splendid singing of the choir. AN INSPECTION OF THE BACK- , BLOCKS. ' The Hon. A. W. Hogg, M.P., Minister .of Roads, Bridges, etc., arrived here by the express train today. Before leaving for Makuri, two deputations waited on the Minister, . one from the County Council consisting of Messrs Thos. Hodgina, A. Ross and H. Cornelius, asking for a grant to metal a deviation at Matheson's bridge, Gorge road, the other fro'n the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce. This deputation (Messrs W. Toaswill, D. Crewe, W. Norrell ande V. i Prosser) placed before the Minister the advisability of com- ' pie ting the remaining six miles of Mt. Marchant road, and also the Kohuuui-Coonoor Gorge road. ' / the Hon, Mr Hogg said be was always pleased with representations of this kind, and the requests asked * were reasonable. There was a large ' amount of ground to cover with a small amount of money, but he would give the matters referred to his earnest consideration, when making up the estimates. Mr Koss, M.P., was also in attendance.
After the deputations withdrew preparations were made for the trip to the back-blocks, and at 4 p.m. three buggy loads, consisting of the Hon..A. W. Hogg, Mr Ross, M.P., Mr Nathan, Government Engineer, Mr Thos. Hodgins, County Chairman, Mr Milne, County Engineer, and Press representatives, left for Makuri. The day was wretched, and the worst we have experienced this year; nevertheless, Mr Hogg was in a jocular mood, and remarked to the Age representative that he was rather pleased it was wet, as when on his last visit to Pongaroa the people of that district said it was always fine when "he visited "them, and he always saw the district and roads at their best.
