PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter)

Thursday. WOODVILLE NOTES. The Woodville Horticultural Society was instituted in 1882 by Mr Haggen, a former proprietor of the "Examiner." The next secretary was Mr Morton, headmaster of the Woodville School, and for the last seventeen years his successor, Mr Stevenson, has 'capably filled the I position. From a small show that could be held in an ordinary room it has grown so that now it demands the full space of the Drill Hall 80ft by GOfr, and it has been faithfully supported by residents of Woodville, particularly by such growers as Messrs J.'Taylor, H. T. Palmar, H. Hawkins, S. Hutching, and J. Nicholas. These gentlemen have given valuable support to the institution. The income in the early days was only £'32, but has now reached the sum of £99. The show is to be held tnisyearon Wednesday, March 3rd, in the Drill Kail. There is a special class for school children, the prizes for such last year amounting to over £lO. As this season'has been a most prolific or*, a large and well assorted show of all classes of horticulture shoulfl be seen at the Drill Hall on Wednesday fortnight. The work of re-classification at the Woodville District High School has been completed, and the year's work satisfactorily started. The children are anxiously looking forward to the school sports which are to-be held at Dannevirke on March 24th. All the schools between Wai■pukarau and Woodville are interested in these sports. The programme will consist of athletic events, battalion drill, club, wands, and dumb-bells competitions. At the Woodville School this morning a very picturesque siu;ht was to be seen, about 150 children practising in the above mentioned events.
