PROBABLE POLICE CHANGES.

THE NEXT COMMISSIONER. 1 It is persistently hinted in quarters usually well-informed that Commissioner Dinnie, who succeeded Commissioner Tunbridge as officer in charge of the police force of New Zealand, is to be appointed successor to Colonel Hume as Inspector of Prisons when that officer retires by virtue of the age regulation, which is to be strictly applied throughout the Civil Service, says the Wellington "Post." Commissioner Dinnie's term cf five years expired in June last, and his appointment is now terminable by three months' notice on either side. If Mr Dinnie is appointed to take charge of the prisons branch, it is further stated that there is every probability of a local < officer being appointed Commissioner of Police. Time and again the policy of going to London for a commissioner lihs been adversely criticised in Parliament, chiefly on t the ground that no matter how well j fitted a man may be for the position, j it takes him a long time to under- j stand New Zealand conditions, and ! to thoroughly familiarise himself with the needs and requirements of j the force. There is a growing feel- | ing that important changes are contemplated in the force, and that these will mean promotion for some local officers who have been connected with the police for many years, and who hold excellent records.
