MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. The Masterton Borough Council mat last evening. Present —The Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) and Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, J. Hunter, A. Haughey, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington, J. Prentice and J. Yarr. A letter tvas received from the Masterton Technical School Managers asking the Council to reconsider its decision regarding the erection of a lamp opposite the new Technical School. The letter was referred to the Gas Committee for favourable consideration. A number of applications for the remission of rates by ratepayers, unable through poverty to pay, were fully gone into, all being granted. Mr A. P. Rawson wrote applying for permission to put in a culvert near his property across the street, for the purpose of irrigating his property from an adjacent streera. —The matter was referred to the Engineer for a report. The Executive of the Presbyterian Summer School wrote heartily thanking the Council for its generosity in granting the school free use of the Public Baths. WORKS COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Works and Finance Committee, held on Tuesday, the 26th ultimo, there were present the Mayor and Crs Elliott. E'.vington, Hunter, Prentice and Yarr. Accounts totalling ,-£856 .lg 8a : were passed for payment. The Borough Engineer, advised that at this season oi : the year it was advisable only to ill! in the holts ou the surface of Nursery Road, the Committe have so ordered. An application was submitted from Mr T. J. Porer asking for a retund of a portion oi the water ratr. on properties in his nc-'joatinn. —The Committee regretted that they could not see th=ir way to grant the request. The Committee gave consideration to the claim of ivir J. jL. i.iai'icty m regard to the r?fund of rates, and they recommende-l that the som of £27 6s 7d be refunded on tha ground that the property had been out of beneficial occupation for a period of six months. The report was adopted, Cr Haughey dissenting, ori account of the remission of rates to Mr Murray, as he contended that there might, be more such applications in view of the Council's actio-:. GAS AND I.IBRAKY COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Gas a:rj Library Committer, held on Monday, there were present Crs Elliott (Chairman), Ewiwgt<m, Haughey and Pragnell. The Chairman of the Trust Lands Trust waited upon the Committee to HURnest that the Borough light the Drill Hall corner lamp during the usual street lighting hours, and keep it clean for a sum of £2 per annum, the arrangment to come into ODeration after the next meter reading.— The Committee reconrnended that such a course be persued, inasmuch as the lamp is of public utility in connection with the lavatory at the rear of the Drill Hall. The Committee received a repprt from the Gas Manager on the nett cost of the production of gas.—The Committee recommended that such gas as is consumed by the Borough be in future charged at the rate of 5s tier 1,000 cubic feet. An application was submitted from the Cemetery Trustees for the supply of 500 gallons of tar for path grouting.—The Committee have instructed the Gas Manager to supply the tar at the rate of 6d per gallon. The report was adopted.
