LOST IN THE BUSH.
A ROUGH EXPERIENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. WAIROA, December 23. Information reached the "Mail" office to-day that Dr Scott, of Auckland, an elderly man, and his daughter about 18 years of age, got lost in the bush on their way from Rotorua to Waikaremoana. The party, fully equipped for a straight-out unsensational journey, left Waiotapu on Monday, the 14th, reaching Galatea the same day. ■— "They left their bicycles there and started on foot for the lake, reaching Te Whaiti without mishap. After leaving there, however, i they became bushed for three days, two of which they were without food or fire, their matches having got ■wet. They slept in the fern at night and spent an uncomfortable time, -mo3t of their clothing being torn to ribbons by the bush lawyers. Two Maori women found the party 'one day's march from Whakatane, and two from the lake. The natives provided a tent, and treated the travellers well, and next day a Maori guided them to Lake House, where they arrived at 7.30 last night, quite exhausted. < Under the care of Mr and Mrs Challis, the caretakers, Dr .and Miss Scott are recovering, and expect to >leave soon for Wairoa. One day the party travelled in a circle, reaching in the evening the spot they left in the morning. Prior to th 6 party turning up, Mr Challis sent out men in a launch and over the ranges without effect. The bush they got into was very dense, and Mr Challis, who has had thirty-three years' bush experience in the South Island, states that he hap seen nothing like it.
