PERSONAL.
Mr Benjamin H. Gowen, who was a popular resident of Masterton for some two years, and a valued member of the Anglican congregation, was married in Vancouver (British Columbia) on July 16th, to Miss Matilda' Cornish. Mr H. Floyd, who trained Arnst for the recent sculling championship, is a native of Wellington. He is the son of the late Mr Thomas Floyd, Wellington's first gaoler, who arrived in New Zealand by the Stains Castle in 1841, when the local gaol was situated at Pipitea Point. Mr Floyd was born at Porirua in 1857, and was actively aFSOciated with rowing affairs in Wellington as a young man r being at one time a member of the famous Dolly Varden crew. Subsequently, when the Dolly Varden was sold by the old Wellington Rowing Club, the boat, which was so often in front in the rowing contests of those days, was purchased by Mr William Hearn and himself, and to his great surprise he learned only a few days ago that it was still in existence stored away in a shed at Foxton". He left for' Australia in 1879 in company with Mr Hearn, when the latter oarsman went to Melbourne to row Messenger, and has resided in Sydney ever since.
