DEPUTATIQN WAIT ON BRITISH PREMIER.
INTRODUCTION OF LEGISLATION URGED.
Received December 15, 9.53 p.m LONDON, December 15.
The Archbishop of Canterbury introduced to the Hon. H. H. Asquith, Prime Minister, an influential deputation representing the National Anti-Sweating League, which urged the introduction of legislation against sweated labour.
Sir Charles Dilke and Mr G. N. Barn:s, Labour M.P., spoke on behalf of the Labour Party, and Earl Dunraven on behalf of the League.
Mr Asquith expressed entire sympathy with the object of the League. Personally, he favoured proceeding by way of a Wages Board. He hoped the Government would be able to provide machinery of that kind which would be properly equipped, prompt and effective. They must proceed cautiously, recognising the delicacy of the problem.
