TREATMENT OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.

GENEROUS TREATMENT REQUESTED. NEARLY ALL OUTSTANDING QUESTIONS SETTLED. Received December 2, 8.15 a.m. LONDON, December 1. Daring the debate on the Education Bill Mr John Dillon, Nationalist member for Mayo, and other Catholic members, pleaded for more generou3 treatment for Catholic schools. Mr Runeiman said he was-confident Catholic subscribers would not •be called on to provide £300,000 a year to keep their schools i.i existence if the grant was increased to 50s per child. Most of the provisions of clause 1 had not been discussed when the closure was applied. Mr Runeiman said he hoped that before the Bill left the House of Commons he would be able to state whether the Church representatives had accepted the Government's terms. A!I outstanding questions had', he announced,, now been settled, excepting that of rent for transferred school grants and contracting out schools.

On clause 2of the Education Bill strong Nonconformist and Radical attacks were directed against the concession giving the right of entry into country schools fo~ religious teaching.
