MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The first ordinary meeting of the newly-elected Council was held on Saturday, the 28th day of November,' at which Crs C. Forsbere, Ole Isakson, J. E. Perry, H. J. Dagg and P. W. H. Kummer were present. Cr Kummer was unanimously elected •Chairman, and, in a few well chosen words, thanked the members present for again placing him in the chair. Shortly after this Cr Jackson attended, all Councillors then being present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confimed, and the standing orders adopted. The Audit-General returned the balance-sheets for year ending March -31st, and half year ending September 30th. The Secretary to the Charitable Aid Board forwarded cheque for £lO2 10s Bd, being a refund of monies advanced by the Council. 'The Commissioner of Crown Lands "forwarded a scheme for expenditure of "thirds" for the Council to fill in and return. The secretaries of the various Chritabk nnd Hospital Boards forwarded notices of the approaching elections of Trustees. The Chairman stated that tne local cricket and football clubs had approached the Railway Department with a view to , leasing the stock paddock—although the Department declined their overtures,it had offered to grant an annual lease to the Council on certain conditions. He brought the matter under the Council's notice to see whether it was disposed to lease the paddock, and thus be in a position to • accommodate i! e local clubs. It was resolved to authorise the Chairman to come to terms with the Department, and also make arrangements with the clubs so that the Council may be relieved as far as practicable >of direct payments of rent. The balance sheet was adopted and 'ordered to be published. Cr Perry •was appointed to vote at the election of Masterton Hospital Trustees on the 7th December. The Overseer was instructed to ascertain the sizes of bridge timber required for repairs, with a view to the totara trees .recently acquired being cut up into suitable sizes—the offer of Messrs Miles and .Nielsen to mill them having been accepted. It was resolved to terminate (after the end of the present year) J. Braddick's appointment as Roadman on the Main Road, owing to the removal of his residence outside the County making it inconvenient for him to attend to the duties required of' him. Councillors were unanimous in expressing their high opinion of his faithful and long-continued services, and it was resolved to grant him a small m recognition of the good work done for the ratepayers while in the Council's employment. .The Chairman and Cr Dagg were -appointed to procure another dray horse. It was resolved to hold the next meeting on Saturday, the 19th DecemDer. , Accounts amounting to ,£142 15s 9d were passed for pay--ment.
