SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

* WEBB AND ARNST AT WORK. CHALLENGER IMPROVING. By Telegraph - Press Association. WANGANUI, November 30. As the date of the Arnst-Webb race approaches, interest in the contest is increasing rapidly. The weather recently has been very favourable for rowing, and both men have done a let of good work since being in camp. Arnst rows twice daily, covering twelve miles altogether in company with Fogwell. He has had several solid spins over the full course, but so far has not attempted any record-breaking. He is in splendid fettle, and is rowing in capital style, always appearing to have a deal of reserve power, though he lacks the finish of the champion. Fogwell invariably leads the challenger in spins, but the impression prevails that Arnst has not yet .shown what he is capable of, and we* will have to wait till the day to see how good he really is. Experts consider the challenger uses his back to great advantage, while his blade work is crispand clean. His boat does not roll nearly so much as formerly, while his dip is scarcely noticeable. Arnst is now 13.5,. and anticipates he will have no difficulty in getting down to his best rowing weight (<13.2). His party is confident he will effect a surprise. He and Fogwell were out twice yesterday, the challenger rowing 22: to the minute over the full l course ih the morning,, and 24 in the afternoon, his boat Elding nicely. Webb, so fary has only had two rows dajly every other day.. He does a morning row, simply a paddle, before breakfast>, having a solid spin over the full, course with. Green as pacemaker, ih the afternoon. Yesterday thechampion covered' the full course,, rowing 24i until a quarter- of- a mile from home,, when :he quickened, up. to 30*. his rowing , being much; admired. He is now- | heavier than* ever previously, and: will; probably weigh 11.4 on, theday of the race.
