THE FOLLY OF STRIKES.

LONDON, NovemDer 27. Sir Christopher Furness, head of the shipbuilding firm of Furness, Withy and Company, speaking at Stockton-on-Tees, deplored the folly of strikes, and declared that during the past year, in the shipbuilding and engineering strikes on the North east Coast, the men alone lost £850,000. Sir Christopher Furness recently took prompt and practical action to inaugurate the co-partnership scheme by which employees are to be given an interest in the firm's business. He has ordered to be constructed, oh his own personal account, twelve steamers from the yards at West Hartlepool, and it is expected that his partners will place an order for another dozen. The co-partnership scheme, which is to be given a year's trial, was devised with the object of doing away with strikes by the company's employees.
