INSURANCE RATES.

The chairman of the National Insurance Company, when acknowledging, at a meeting of shareholders at Dunedin last week, a vote of thanks to the staff and directors, remarked that Government taxes had increased in the past year by between £3OO and £4OO. Included in this amount was the beginning of the levy to support the fire brigades. This would be a very heavy tax. He said: —"I am very much afraid the insurance companies doing business in New Zealand will be compelled in the near future to raise their rates to cover this new demand."
