MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yes- 1 terday afternoon. There were present—Crs. W. J. Welch W. Harris, J. Miiler, j. Morris, H. 0. Toogood, J. Colquhoun* A. Murray, C. Kebbeil, R. F. Beetham. On the motion of Cr. Toogood, it was decided tes call tenders for metalling the balance of the East Coast Road. The Roads Department notified I that £3O had been granted to expend on the Kakaunui track for widening I the end and clearing away slips. — It was decided on the motion of Cr ! Murray, to have the work carried out immediately. ' A. Larsen applied for permission to erect, a swing gate across Dorset's Road extenion, the application hav- ' ing been duly advertised.—The application was granted, subject to the gate being erected under the instruction of the Engineer and Cr Colquhoun. The Commissioner of Crown Lands notified that if the accrued thirds were not soon expended they would be handed over to the Roads Department. The Secretary of the South Wairarapa Hospital notified that the annual election of Trustees would t&ke place at a meeting of local body delegates to be held on December 7th, and stating that the Council were entitled to send a delegate. Tie Chief Engineer of Roads wrote to enquire if the Council would take up a £250 gran!; for Barton's bridge, (Waingawa) . —lt was decided to inform trie Department that the Council had no interest in the proposal. Mr R PitcaithJy wrote to ask that repairs might be effected on Tawataio Road, which was in a bad state, with broken culverts and inefficient water tables.—The matter was left in the hands of the Engineer and the Riding representative. The Commissioner of Crown Lands notified that the £l3B Is 8d thirds from Saunders and Puketoi Roads could be spent on either or both roads. Health Inspector Hicks notified that some holes near the Blairlogie Junction Hotel were likely to become insanitary, and should be filled up.— 1 The letter was "received." Mr R. Riddifor j wrote requesting ' the Council to repair the fences en- ' closing the roadman's cottage at " Motuwaireka, on the section leased ' from him.

FINANCE COMMITTEE.

The Finance Committee met in the morning. There were present— CrsO. Kebbell (chairman), J. Miller, J. Morris, H. Tooguod, A. Murray, and W. J. Wekh.

The Treasurer reported as follows: —Bank general account, dr., £3,163 3s sd; Local Bodies Loans account, cr.., £660 7s lOd; Accounts, debit, £2,602 9s sd; receipts since September Bth, £1,116 5s 7d. Accounts amounting to £747 2s were passed for payment. The payment was authorised of a cheque for £lO 5s to Mr VV. Pryor for appearing before the Arbitration Court at Masterton last month on behalf of the local bodies concerned in connection with the Labourers' Dispute. The Committee recommended the remission of £3 5s rates due by a widow in poor circumstances. Cr Morris moved that in future no .accounts for clearing out drains on the roads be recognised unless approved by the Engineer.—The motion was carried. On the motion of Cr Harris, it was decided to notify property owners who had gorse, broom or sweet briar growing on their properties which overhang the road to cut down the same.
