POLITICAL.

By Telegraph—Press Association. TIMART.T, October 6. The political campaign opened in South Canterbury to-night, when Mr W. H. Williams, one of five candidates for the Geraldine electorate, addressed a largely-attended meeting in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka. Mr Williams announced himself as a supporter of the Government in general, but coi.sidered there was room for economy in administration. Too much money had been spent on the Tourist Department, to the detriment of roads for the backblock settlers.. The speech dealt chiefly with the land and labour question**. The speaker advocated continuance of the present land policy, strongly : defending the leasehold system. More amicable relations would require to be established between capital and labour. Each should learn to recognise that it is dependent on the other, and while employers should pay a fair living wage, employees should aim at deservinf s good treatment. He believed in taxing all luxuries, including motor cars, and taking taxation off necessaries of life. Mr Williams was given an attentive hearing. He replied to a number of questions, and was accorded a vote of thanks. By Telegraph—Special to Wairarapa Age. FEILDING, October 6.
