ASSOCIATION MATCH. , MASTERTON v. WELLINGTON. i Judging, by the following critique, •which has been forwarded by a Wellingtonian on the Wellington representative eleven, which will play Maaterton to-morrow (Thursday) on the Showgrounds, the local team will have to play hard ,to win, but the latter are confident of putting up a good fight, as their full team will be available : S. F. McLean (Ramblers), goalkeeper—Cool and collected, clears well, and has had plenty of experience. G. Wilson (Swifts), full-back-Clever, resourceful and powerful kick; not afraid of hard tackling. F. Hart (Wanderers), full-back— A"good safe player, determined in defence and places well to his forwards. G. Guise; (Swifts), right half— The "star" back can play in any position equally well; a determined tackier.
P. Pye Smith (Swifts), centre-half —Solid alike in attack and defence, fast and a good shot at goal; really a forward.
Hatchett (Wanderers), left half— A neat half-back, excelling mainly in defence.
J. A.' McLean (Swifts), right wing—'A clean and fast player, centres well and a good shot. G. Taylor (Wanderers), inside right-the "class" forward, feeds his wing well, unselfish and a good shot at goal. S. J. Wills (Ramblers), centreReplacing Elliott; is reallj a wing man, fast and a good shot. A. Macklin (Y.M.C.A.) inside left —Fast, unselfish, and a likely scorer.
A. Holland (Wanderers), left wing—A neat wing man, centres well and is unselfish. The Wanderers' men are all Home pluyers; the remainder of the team are colonials. Taking it all through, the team is a good one, and should give a fine exhibition. The backs are all safa players. Possibly Taylor will play centre, and Wills play on the wingl Mr B. L, Salmon, secretary of the New Zealand Football Association, will be manager of the team. Mr A. Newson, Wellington, will referee, and Mr R.,Dalzell will be the Wellington linesman.
The match at Auckland last, Saturday between Otago and Auckland is described as a "battle of forwards." For the first time for years Auckland met their match in the forward division, and admitted the excellence of the Southern forwards. A special feature of the game was the wing forward play of McDonald, the "All-Black," who gave the Auckland 1 backs endless trouble.
