THE GOVERNMENT DEFEATED.

The debate in the House of Representatives on the Education Bill came to an abrupt termination shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday morning, when the Government were defeated on an amendment moved by Mr Wilford, that an addition be made to a certain clause to the effect that school books should be uniform throughout the Dominion. The Minister for Education said that he could not accept the amendment, but the hour being late there was no discussion. The amendment was carried against the Government by 30 to 23. On the result of the division being announced, the Minister slated that he was not prepared to accept the alteration. He at once moved to report progress, and this being carried the House arose amidst a general buzz of excitement amongst members. The division list was as follows:—Ayes (30).—Messrs Arnold, Barber, Barclay, Buddo, Chappie, Ell, Fisher, Flatman, A. L. D. Fraser, Graham, Gray, Greenslade, Guinness, Hall, Hogan, Izard, Lawry, Macpherson, Malcolm, Massey, Poland, Remington, Ross, Sidey, Steward, Symes, Tanner, Wilford, Witty, Wood. Noes (23). Messrs Ait Ken, J. Allen, Baume, Carroll, Colvin, Field, Fowldi, Hanan, Heke, Hogg, Kidd, Laurenson, Lethbridge, McGowan, T. Mackenzie, McNab, Major, Mander, Okey, Reid, Rhodes, Stallworthy, Ward.
