The friends of Mrs Dalziel, of Manawa, wili regret to hear that she is very ill. Mrs A. T. Hancock, of Tinui, who ■ha» been very ill for several weeks, is still confined to her bed. The Acting Town Clerk, Mr W. T. Mansfield, received a very flattering reference at the hands of the Mayor last evening. Mr Rollings said, on the occasion of the presentation to him, that the Acting Town Clerk's devotion to his work' was very giv-at indeed, and to His Worship, who hud a great deal of business to attend to, Mr Mansfield's assistance was most valuable. He thought that few Councillors recognised how really assiduous the Acting Town Clerk was, and how great was his desire to serve the Council faithfully. The Mayor's remarks on this point were received with applause.
A unique presentation was made to the Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) last evening, after the business ox the evening had been concluded. Cr J. Elliott said that a certain event had occurred which Councillors had felt that it was their duty to recognise, and in handing to His Worship a handsomely designed silver cradle, mounted on an ebony base and enclosed in a glass case, Cr Elliott expressed the Council's aopreciation of the fact that the Mayor was setting so noble an example as a citizen in removing the modern reproach of society—the empty cradle. Cr Elliott congratulated Mrs Hollings also, and referred to the exeilent feeling which had existed between the Council and the Mayor since the latter's accession to ofltee, and the business-lika way in which the Council's Work wae carried through. Other Councillors added words of hearty congratulation to His Worship and Mrs Hollings, and hoped the Mavor would always remember the felicitous occasion as being linked with an important period of His Worship's life. Mr Hollings made a fe u ling speech of thanks, j expressing his great surprise at the j function, which was totally unex- I pected. His Worship said the orca- j sion served to show that public life j had its compensations as well as its drawbacks, and he assured the Coun- 1 cil that Mrs Hollings would treasure ' the gift very much indeed.
