THE IMMIGRATION PROBLEM.
When Mr Rudyard Kipling advised J British Columbia that the best solution of the Asiatic problem was "to pump in the whites" he only repeated in his peculiar idiom the advice of Mr Roosevelt to the Australians and the counsel to the colonies of every thoughtful statesman. One very encouraging feature of Australian politics is the growing courage and energy with which the various State Governments are facing the immigration question and the increasing disposition of the general public to support any immigiatxm policy which avoids the evils of the indiscriminate "dumping" that brought Stale-aided immigration into disrepute at the first suggestion of industrial depression. Ne.v S.iuth Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and i West Australia are entering (into j quit-j warm rivalry in their eflfortis to i attract a desirable class of immi- ] grants. .
