SOUTH AFRICAN FODDER.
STERILISATION SATISFACTORY
Keceived August 10, 10.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 10. i The Minister for Agriculture has cabled to the Cape authorities stating that the sterilisation of the recent shipment of hay having proved satisfactory, he will permit further shipments subject to the same treatment. Reports of the proceedings in the Cape Parliament on June 21, 22 and 23, when the prohibition of South African hay and fodder by Victoria and New South Wales was discussed, have been received, and it appears that the matter was regarded with strong feelings at the Cape. On June 21, when Dr. Viljoen moved he adjournment of the House of Assembly, Mr Malan informed the House of the history of the trouble, and remarked that they had had during the last twelve months, no suspicion of disease in the grain districts. Dr. Smartt pointed out how strong the case was for the Cape Colony, which had not nearly the amount of disease that Australia had, while they were using a large quantity of Australian goods, most of the imported grain being Australian. He recommended the strongest possible pro e t, with a hint of possible retaliatory action, unless the embargo was withdrawn. On June 22, after again referring fully to the matter,. ,Mr Malan said that he regretted the action of Australia, and he would say nothing about preference, a remark received with laughter. He said emphatically thac no did not see how there could be the slightest danger in the matter.
