JAPANESE MERCHANT NAVY.
The growth of the merchant navy of Japan, which has been made the subject of a reoemt article in a German paper, has been truly phenomenal. It
wa« only in 1872 that the first Japanese steamship company was established, and in 1835 wh'Mi the Nippon Yushen Kasha was formed, the totul tonnage of the Japanese merchant fleet only B»,200 tons n*t. During the next ten years this total grew to 210,G00 tons, vhich was the record in 1895. Twelve mora years and we find the net register in 1907 was 834,i500 tons. To this total sailing vessels contribute 168,400 tons, and steamers 666,100 tons. For purposes of comparison it may bo stated that the American steam fleet is twice as large as the Japanese, the German three and a-half times greater, and the British fifteen times larger.
