CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was Held yesterday afternoon. There were present:— Messrs G. C. Summerell (in the chair), J. D. Cruickshank, H. Donald, .1. C. Ewington, F. W. Carey and J. B Mondie. Leave of absence was granted to several members. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £3 9s 2d. Mr D. Douglas, of Lands End, Te Wharau, wrote urging upon the l.'tiamber to move in the direction of obtaining direct telephone communication between Te Wharau, Gladstone and Masterton. The writer at >ted that at present the Carterton E.vhange had to be used, and this caused annoyance and delay. Mr T. G. Mason (President of the Chamber) wrote from Wellington on the subject, stating that in an interview he had had with the Superintendent of Telegraphs the latter had advised that direct application shou'.d be made to tho Department in the matter. A motion was passed adopting Mr Mason's suggestion. The County Clerk forwarded a letter stating that his Council had decided to merely "receive" the Chamber's letter regarding the opening up of a road to the Whareama Fishery, as there was no expressed desire on the part ol settlers to have the road opened up. Mr Ewington said it was not a matter of whether the settlers wished it, as the public desired it. Next year would see the river a popular week- ;nd resort, and something would need to be done to obviate the access hnving io be made to the river through private property. It was unanimously decided to inform Mr Hornsby of the County Council's reply, and to ask him and Mr Hogg to urge upon the Government to"open up the road asked. The Secretary pointed out that although it was as far back as March last since the Government promised to (rive caroful consideration to the Charbsr'a resolution regarding the eivition of Government offices in Masterton, no further action had been taken by them. The meeting decided to bring the matter under the notice of Mr Hogg, and to ask his co-operation in connection therewith.
