CHINESE CONSUL GENERAL
Received July 17, 10.7 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 17. Long Lan Tun, the Taotai of Swatow, has been appointed Chinese Consul-General in the Commonwealth. He arrives in September next.
A THREATENED STRIKE.
Received July 18, 1.7 a.m. SYDNEY, July 17. The Secretary of the Western Miners' Association stated to-night that the Lithgow Co;il Association whs supnlying the Hoskins brick wovks with coal, and coal was also going to Hoskins' brass furnaces from the coast. Unless the Hoskins Company were prepared to put back the miners, who are members of the Western Association, in their ironstone tui?nel to fill coal, the whole of the coal miners and coal workers of the State will strike on Monday. Mr Hoskins, interviewed, said that he was sorry to hear the miners' decision, but he had no hopes of restarting the works under three weeks.
